Tax and spend fiscal plan will inhibit growth

Task Force on Canada’s Economic Future

The Business Council of Canada launched the Task Force on Canada’s Economic Future, which engaged Canadians from across the country to advance policies that enhance growth and ensure a better future for all.

Working together for Canada’s economic future

Canada is the best place in the world to live, work and raise a family.

Despite that, growing numbers of Canadians – from all regions and backgrounds – are concerned about their economic futures.

As business leaders who care about our employees and the communities in which we live and work, we’re committed to working with government and others to strengthen Canada’s ability to compete globally for jobs, talent and investment. That way, we can be sure that future generations will enjoy the high quality of life and social programs that have made our country the envy of the world.

This is why we launched the Task Force on Canada’s Economic Future.

A better future for Canadians

Canada’s economy faces serious headwinds, including an aging population, weak productivity and rising global protectionism. Slower growth over the long run will inevitably mean fewer opportunities for our children and grandchildren, higher rates of unemployment, and less money for vital public services such as health care, education and transit.

The core issue in Canada is a lack of urgency. It’s not just on government. A lot of this stuff is on business, too.

Read the report and recommendations that outline how governments, businesses and other stakeholders can work together to strengthen Canada’s economic capacity, accelerate growth and spur investment for the benefit of all citizens. At the same time, it calls on employers to enhance Canada’s human potential by embracing diversity and inclusion in the workplace, promoting mental health and supporting a more skilled and innovative workforce.

Helping shape an agenda for growth

Drawing on the expertise of our members – business leaders and entrepreneurs whose companies employ nearly 2 million Canadians and positively impact the lives of millions more – we worked with a diverse range of stakeholders and reached out to all Canadians to help shape an agenda for growth.

The Task Force on Canada’s Economic Future has been led by three co-chairs:

  • Chuck Magro, President and Chief Executive Officer, Nutrien Ltd.
  • Nicole Verkindt, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, OMX
  • Louis O. Vachon, President and Chief Executive Officer, National Bank of Canada
